Real Life Applications

Real Life Applications

There are so many different ways to use augmented reality, especially since there are two different types of AR. Below are just a few examples of how to use AG in education, entertainment and throughout the business world. I can't wait to see how augmented reality changes in the next few months and years.

How can you use Augmented Reality in education?
"The world environment around us provides a wealth of information that is difficult to duplicate in a computer."(Vallino,2002) Most virtual environments are very simple and just for entertainment, like games, or the ones that are more realistic are very expensive and are used as training tools for engineers. (Vallino,2002)  But augmented reality brings the world environment that has such a " wealth of information" into the classroom, so that teachers have access to real life situations and scenarios that the students can learn from. By using augmented reality the students will be more engaged in the lesson and will be able to make connections between what they are learning and the real world.
The Horizon Report states that "augmented reality is an active, not a passive technology; students can use it to construct new understanding based on interactions with virtual objects that bring underlying data to life." (Horizon Report, 2011) Many colleges and  technical institutions use augmented reality to help train students for the workforce. Students in the medical field use AR to find problems with patients and map out surgeries. Engineer and automotive students use AR to help diagnose problems with their equipment and to help visualize how different components work.

There are many museums that use augmented reality to enhance a student's experience when they are on a tour of the museum or the student is able to feel like that are actually at the museum using the AR at home.

This is a video of "The Getty Museum" and how they use augmented reality.

The video below shows different ways to use augmented reality in the classroom. It shows math, science, English, foreign language, and health activities that can enhance how a student learns and help to engage the students in the learning process.

This is a video of how augmented reality can be used in books. Instead of reading about history, bring history to life with a video and show models of what the homes looked like during that time period.

One great website, is the GE augmented reality website. There are different interactive activities, where students can see what GE is doing and what they can do to help save energy. Then there are two markers that pops out and shows wind turbines and solar power. I think students would love to see a 3-d model of alternative was to save energy.

How can you use Augmented Reality in business?

Augmented reality was first used for businesses and has now crossed over into entertainment and education. One of the first businesses that uses augmented reality was Boeing. They had a model of an airplane and used the model to show how to put wires throughout an airplane. AR helped the worker at Boeing to actually see where the cable wires needs to be placed in the aircraft, instead of trying to use a complicated diagram that was hard to understand.
The military uses augmented reality to train pilots to fly planes and to create simulations for soldiers. Retail stores are just now starting to come out with apps and online AR sites to try on and buy clothes without physically walking into a store to try anything on.Toy companies like Lego are using AR for advertising their product, by testing it out using 3-D imaging. Auto Manufacturers are using augmented reality to efficiently save time and money by providing step by step instructions on how to take apart and put together cars.

This video is how BMW uses augmented reality.

This video is shopping for clothes using augmented reality.

How can you use Augmented Reality for entertainment purposes?
There are lots of augmented reality games that you can play, but I have lots of fun with the website below.

You can become Iron Man and see what Tony Stark saw in his head piece. Here is a video of me using augmented reality on the website.

While searching the Web I also found that lots of people have started making their own business cards using augmented reality. If people can create business cards, it's only a matter of time before augmented reality birthday and holiday cards. That would put a fun twist on sending cards to friends and family.
