How did Augmented Reality get its start?

Augmented Reality has many components that make it what it is today. It is sometimes referred to as a "blended reality." The underlying components of augmented reality have been around since 1957.

In 1957 there was a man named Morton Heilig and he build a machine called the "Sensorama." It was like a watching a movie but it used all of your senses.

1966 -  Ivan Sutherland invented a head piece that is mounted on the ceiling, because it was to heavy to just be placed on your head.

1975  - Myron Krueger created a program called Videoplace and for the first time people could work with virtual objects.

1989 -  Jaron Lanier introduced the phrase Virtual Reality. He also created the first business for virtual worlds.

1990 - Tom Caudell introduced the phrase Augmented Reality. He was working at Boeing and helped to create the model of an aircraft to show workers where to put cable wires throughout the plane.

1992 -  L.B. Rosenberg created the first augmented reality system, which was named "Virtual Fixtures."

1993  - NAVSTAR GPS system was created for the military.

1997  - Phillippe Kahn invented the first camera phone.

1999  -  Hirokazu Kato created the augmented reality toolkit. "The toolkit let people take video of the real world and interact with the virtual objects as well as 3-D graphics." (Sung, 2011)

2000  - Bruce Thomas created an "outdoor mobile augmented reality video game." (Sung, 2011)

2008  - the first smartphone app for augmented reality
